As this week is diabetes week we’d like to take the opportunity to highlight the importance of declaring diabetes when you buy travel insurance.

Diabetes week is organised each year by Diabetes to UK to raise awareness of diabetes and its symptoms, this year the focus is on tackling undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes week was launched yesterday by Steps singer Lee Latchford-Evans along with others attempting to break the world record for the most waists measured at one time. The event kick started a series of Health Lifestyle Road Shows which will be run by Diabetes UK and Bupa across the UK to offer free diabetes risk assessments and lifestyle advice.

Those most at risk of diabetes type 2 are people who are over 40 and are overweight with a large waist, particularly those with a close relative suffering from diabetes.

Diabetes UK has warned that as many as one on 70 people in Britain suffer from diabetes type 2 without realising it, suggesting that most people will have a family or friend suffering from diabetes type 2 who don’t realise it.

Experts say that the soaring rate of diabetes type 2 is fuelled by obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and an unhealthy diet. Diabetes type 2 occurs when the body gradually loses the ability to process blood sugar, leading to high levels which can damage the organs in the body.

Getting the right travel insurance for diabetes

If you are a diabetic, regardless of the severity of your diabetes, you need to declare it when you buy travel insurance. This will ensure that you are properly covered by your travel insurance in the event that you need medical treatment related to your diabetes whilst you are away.

Many travel insurance policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions, including diabetes, from their travel insurance cover, so be careful, don’t just assume that your diabetes will be covered.
