diabetes in children

With the news that the UK has the fifth highest rate of type 1 diabetes in children in the world, we’re highlighting the symptoms to look out for.

We’ll also be talking about the importance of getting the right diabetes travel insurance cover for your holiday if a member of your family suffers from diabetes.

Every year more than 24 in every 100,000 children under 14 are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, for which treatment with insulin is required.

Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms

Common symptoms of diabetes type 1 are; needing to go to the toilet frequently, increased thirst, extreme tiredness, and unexplained weight loss.

Look out for the 4 Ts.

  • Thirsty
  • Toilet (needing to go more often)
  • Tired
  • Thinner

Type 1 diabetes is not linked to obesity or lifestyle and experts are unsure why the type 1 diabetes rates in children in the UK are so high compared to some of our neighbours. (France and Italy have a rate of 12 in every 100,000 children, roughly half that of the UK).

Approximately 2000 children a year are diagnosed with diabetes type 1. Diabetes UK and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) are reminding people how vital it is to be aware of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes because if diabetes is left undiagnosed it can lead to serious illness and even death.
