New Regulations Aim to Cut Lost Luggage by 30%

Added 14/11/2017

Good news for airline passengers: Steps are being taken which aim to cut the amount of bags lost in transit by 30%.

From next summer airlines are to be forced to implement improved luggage tracking in an attempt to reduce the numbers of bags which go missing.

Airlines will have a new duty to track bags at four critical points during the journey, and will generate an alert if bags have been lost. This removes the onus from passengers to raise the alarm when bags fail to turn up on the collection belt.

Last year more than 21 million pieces of luggage went missing after check-in.

According to studies by aviation technology company Sita, more than 90% of lost bags are reunited with their owners, although 1 in 6 was damaged or had content stolen.

Travel Insurance for Personal Possessions and Luggage

Travel insurance can provide cover if your bags are lost, stolen or damaged whilst in the care of your airline.
If your bags are lost or damaged in transit, make sure you obtain a property irregularity report from the airline as you will need this in order to make a claim on your travel insurance.

Gold and Platinum travel insurance policies from Goodtogoinsurance.com include cover for your personal possessions whilst away, including whilst they are in transit.

Please note: valuable items such as jewellery, watches, hearing aids, eyewear, cameras and electrical items are not covered if they are placed in checked-in luggage.  These items should be placed in your hand luggage.  Please see the policy wording for full terms and conditions.
