Florence
Florence has a good selection of accessible restaurants and attractions.

Planning a city break in Europe? Whether you're travelling with mobility issues, a medical condition, or simply want peace of mind while abroad, choosing a destination that supports your needs is key.

A new study* by Good To Go Insurance has ranked Europe’s most accessible city destinations based on flight times, hospital access, public transport and how easy it is to enjoy local sights and restaurants.

Here are the best cities for an accessible holiday - and why they’re ideal for travellers who need a little extra support.

1. Paris Tops the List for Accessibility

Known as the City of Lights, Paris comes out on top as the most accessible destination overall. It ranked highly across almost all key metrics - including flight time, hospital capacity, and restaurant accessibility. Despite some limitations in the variety of public transport and accessible attractions, Paris remains one of the best-balanced options for travellers seeking culture and comfort. If you’re planning a short break, make sure you’re covered with European travel insurance that supports your needs.

2. Italian Cities Dominate the Top 5

Three Italian cities make it into the top five: Milan, Florence and Venice.

Florence shines with the most accessible restaurants and attractions, while Milan scores well across several areas. Venice, although limited in public transport options, still offers great accessibility in central areas.

Italy’s historic cities combine beauty with support - ideal for older tourists or those with mobility aids. Before you go, check if you’ll benefit from accessible travel insurance for added peace of mind.

3. Lisbon, Amsterdam and Prague Offer Well-Rounded City Breaks

Lisbon and Amsterdam both rank highly for ease of navigation, attractions and medical facilities.

Prague also stands out as an excellent mid-range option - offering a mix of historic charm and user-friendly transport options, making it ideal for a relaxing, scenic getaway.

4. Destinations That Fell Short

While many major cities scored well, others ranked lower in the study. Dublin, despite being close in terms of flight time, scored poorly for public transport and hospital availability.

Madrid, Warsaw, and Stockholm also failed to meet the mark for accessible holidays. At the bottom of the list is Istanbul, which scored lowest overall despite offering strong public transport coverage.

These results highlight the importance of researching destination infrastructure before you book - and choosing travel insurance for medical conditions if you have ongoing health concerns.

5. Accessibility is Getting Better Every Year

Grant Winter, compliance officer at Good To Go Insurance, notes that travel is becoming more accessible year on year. “Many world-class destinations are now offering brilliant infrastructure for older or disabled travellers,” he says.

“From accessible city centres to well-equipped hospitals, it’s easier than ever to enjoy a cultural break without sacrificing comfort or safety.”
