With the summer holidays just around the corner, many of us are eagerly anticipating our next getaway. But before the relaxation begins, there's the small matter of getting there, often by air. For many, especially older travellers or those with pre-existing medical conditions, flying can be uncomfortable and even physically demanding.

To help you enjoy a smoother journey our travel expert Maria Hughes and Michael Fatica, lead osteopath and co-founder of the Back in Shape Program, have shared seven expert-approved tips to make your flight as comfortable as possible.

1. Pack comfort essentials

Travelling with the right items can make a world of difference.

“As well as books and headphones, don’t forget comfort boosters,” says Maria. “A neck pillow offers crucial head and neck support, and an eye mask can help you rest more easily. Pack hydrating face mist to combat cabin dryness and some healthy snacks - especially if your flight doesn't include a meal.”

Michael adds, “A small rolled towel is ideal for lumbar support, far better than most travel pillows. It helps maintain a neutral spine, particularly helpful for those flying with lower back pain or residual injuries.”

2. Dress for comfort, not style

3. Consider pre-existing medical conditions

If you live with chronic pain, such as neck or back issues, these can often be classed as pre-existing medical conditions. It’s important to ensure you have the right travel insurance cover, and also take steps to manage your condition during the flight.

4. Don’t be afraid to fidget

“Fidgeting is actually good for you,” explains Michael. “It helps redistribute pressure and avoid straining the same area of your back for extended periods. This is especially important for anyone flying with chronic back pain.”

5. Choose the right seat

Your seat selection can have a real impact on your comfort. “Aisle seats give you freedom to get up and move around. And during turbulence or landing, use the armrests to take some of the load off your spine,” says Michael. “It’s a simple trick that can significantly reduce lower back pressure.”

6. Take regular movement breaks

Long-haul flights can be particularly tough on your joints and muscles. “Make a habit of walking up and down the aisle, even briefly,” suggests Michael. “If you’re able to, try some gentle lower-body stretches. Stretching your hip flexors and hamstrings can really help after hours of sitting.”

7. Decompress when you arrive

Once you land, don’t just flop on the bed - use it to your advantage. “Try the bed decompression technique,” says Michael. “Lie face down across the bed with your arms dangling off the sides. Use your upper arms to push gently against the bed, which decompresses your lower back. It’s a simple and effective way to ease tension after a long flight.”
