Airports with direct flights to the USA have been directed by the US Transport Security Administration (TSA) to increase their screening of electronic devices.

Airports and airlines across the world are obliged to meet the TSA regulations in order to be able to operate direct flights to the US.

The latest information from the UK’s Department of Transport advises all passengers flying to the USA to:

“Make sure your electronic devices are charged before you travel. If your device doesn’t switch on, you won’t be allowed to bring it onto the aircraft.”

The BBC has reported that Heathrow and Manchester are among airports which have told passengers to ensure all electronic devices carried as hand baggage are charged before travel if they are flying to the US.

Airline staff will carry out checks on the devices at boarding gates.

The increase in security is in response to what American officials have called a ‘credible’ terrorist threat.

Although the authorities have not provided a specific list of the devices now subject to the power-on checks, you should ensure that any electronic device such as a phone, tablet, MP3 player, electric shaver or camera, which you intend to carry in your hand luggage is fully charged. It may also be a good idea to carry the charger with you.
