Spanish airport strikes announced. More disruption for British holiday makers
09/03/2011
A series of peak season strikes have been announced by Spanish airport workers. The dispute is between AENA, the Spanish state-owned company with runs the major airports and its ground staff.
Strikes are being planned to cause maximum disruption, and are set for 22 dates over the peak spring and summer holiday period. They are likely to affect Easter getaways, the Royal Wedding weekend, half term and the main summer holidays in July and August.
The strikes are planned for;
April - 20, 21, 24, 25, 30
May - 2, 14, 15, 19, 20
June - 13, 23, 30
July - 1, 2, 3, 4, 15, 31
August - 1, 15 31
Are the strikes covered by your travel insurance?
So long as you booked your holiday and bought your travel insurance before the strike dates were announced you will be covered under the travel delay section of your travel insurance, in the event that your flight is affected.
This reinforces the fact that you should buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday in order to get the maximum protection available.
The Spanish government has indicated in the past that it will take a hard line with any group of workers threatening to disrupt tourism. It is believed to be drafting plans to bring the military in to provide emergency cover. We can only wait and see if the planned strikes go ahead.
The news of more strikes on the way will undoubtedly encourage British holiday makers to avoid travelling to Spain for their much valued holiday this summer. With tour operators and holiday companies cutting back on holidays to Egypt and Tunisia after last month’s civil unrest, this could result in prices to other short haul, summer sun resorts rising.
