Holidays to Greece affected by Public Sector Strikes

05/05/2010

A 24 hour strike is taking place today in Greece. All flights to and from any Greek airport will be suspended for 24 hours, which is having an impact on travellers that have booked holidays to Greece. Trains and ferries are also at a standstill.

Transport and public sector workers are taking part in a mass protest in retaliation against the government's recent austerity.

Major wage cuts, pension cuts and tax rises have led to nationwide frustration in the public sector. Today's strike is the third of its kind this year in Greece.

Protests began on Tuesday, with thousands of teachers and students marching to parliament, armed with black flags. The demonstration was reasonably peaceful. A mass rally is planned to parade through the streets of Athens today.

Regular demonstrations are expected to carry on throughout May and air travel could continue to be affected, causing major disruptions to tourists that have booked holidays to Greece.

All flights to and from Greece are suspended today. If you have a holiday to Greece booked, contact your airline before you fly to find out if flights are still running.

You can also visit the FCO website for information about the demonstrations in Greece. The FCO updates their website on a daily basis with details of specific dates for planned strikes. As yet, no further planned strikes have been announced.

If you need to delay or cancel your holiday to Greece due to the strikes, contact your travel insurance provider to find out if they'll cover you for cancellation. If you have booked your holiday with a tour operator, contact them to find out if you can reschedule your holiday for an alternative date if necessary.
