Diabetes and obesity cases soar in the UK
25/10/2010

Over the last year, diabetes and obesity cases have risen in the UK. Around 150,000 people were diagnosed with diabetes in the last year, bringing the total to 2.8 million. The number of people registered with obesity has risen by 265,000. Now around 5.5 million people are obese in the UK. There is a link between diabetes and obesity.
A spokesman for Diabetes UK commented on the connection between diabetes and obesity: ‘Many, but not all, people develop Type 2 diabetes because they are overweight or obese so we must keep up the mantra of 'five fruit and veg a day', encourage daily physical activity and warn of the potentially devastating consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle.’
Treating diabetes makes up around 10% of NHS costs. People need to consider their lifestyle and diet in order remain healthy to keep diabetes and obesity at bay. For many people, exercise and a healthy diet can reduce your weight and lower your chances of contracting Type 2 diabetes. Nine in ten diabetics suffer from Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a serious illness and the increase in sufferers in worrying. If not treated properly, it can lead to other severe health issues such as blindness or amputation.
