The Queen to name new Cunard cruise ship 'Queen Elizabeth'
02/09/2010

On 11 October 2010, the Queen will be in Southampton for the naming of a new Cunard cruise ship. Like all the ships in the Cunard fleet, the new addition will be given a regal name – Queen Elizabeth. The Queen was also in attendance of the naming of a Cunard cruise ship in 1938, which was also called the Queen Elizabeth.
Cunard has other cruise ships in its fleet that have been named after royal figures, such as the Queen Mary II and the Queen Victoria.
The brand new 2,092 passenger ship will set sail on its maiden voyage the day after the naming ceremony, bound for a 13 night cruise to the Canary Islands.
The new Cunard cruise ship is in keeping with the company’s luxurious reputation. The style of the Queen Elizabeth combines elegance from the 1938 cruise ship of the same name with modern twists. The on board spa has stunning ocean views and a glass encased fitness centre. There is also a theatre and games deck to play croquet or bowls. Meanwhile, the Queen’s Grill restaurant embodies fine dining and themed balls will take place in the Queen’s Room.
All accommodation options on the Queen Elizabeth are spacious, even the inside standard state rooms. Most cabins have private balconies and flat screen televisions. The Queen’s Grill suites offer pure luxury with full bathrooms and private verandas. You can even have champagne delivered to your suite and the services of a personal butler, who can arrange your onshore activities.
Cunard offers cruises all over the world including Mediterranean and Caribbean cruises, and cruises closer to home that leave from Southampton for people that don’t like flying. Cunard was the first operator to provide world voyages over a century ago and they still offer them today.
If you intend to book a cruise, don’t forget to buy travel insurance that provides cover for cruises, which may need to be added as extra cover to standard policies.
